Camping is a wonderful bonding experience that allows parents and their children to enjoy the splendours of the outdoors together. There are certain special considerations to keep in mind, though, when children are taken into the wilderness. Reviewing the list of quick tips below can help keep a family camping trip safe and fun for everyone.
Plan ahead! Don’t throw the trip together at the last minute; sort out all of the details ahead of time.
Check your campground! Some camping sites are inappropriate for children; make sure yours is family friendly.
Gear up! Bring the right equipment for the area’s attractions; there’s no way to enjoy a swim without suits or a hike without boots.
Pack heavy! Kids can tear through clean clothes when they’re roughing it; bring along plenty of back-up outfits.
Double check! Compose a list of everything you need to bring along; check everything off before you set off.
Light is safety! Make sure everyone has a flashlight with them at all times; give children one of their very own.
Prepare for injuries! Accidents both large and small can happen on a camping trip; bring a first aid kit and be familiar with its contents.
Be a team! The initial set-up of the campground can be boring for kids if they have nothing to do; get them to help pitch tents and unpack bags.
Set the rules! Prepare children in advance for what they should and should not do; make sure they understand their responsibilities from the start of the trip.
Write the menu! Bringing the right food in the right quantities is vital; planning every meal in advance will ensure that everyone gets enough to eat.
Introducing children to the great outdoors makes for a delightful family holiday. With a little foresight and a little planning along the lines suggested above, children can be introduced to the joys of camping with a safe, exciting wilderness trip.
If the very thought of camping leaves you cold, look for some decent Cornish holiday cottages instead!
